Security Questionnaires for Customer Success: The Handoff Playbook
Coordinate a customer's security questionnaire without guessing technical answers. Use an intake checklist, ownership matrix and ready-to-copy expert request.

When a security questionnaire reaches customer success, the CSM should coordinate the customer request and route technical claims to the people who can verify them. A clear handoff captures the service scope, deadline, requested format, evidence needs and approving owner before anyone starts copying last year's answers.
This playbook is for B2B suppliers responding to enterprise customers. It is particularly useful when a small customer trust or security team supports several account teams.
What should customer success own?
Customer success owns the account context: what the customer is buying or renewing, who requested the review, what decision is blocked and when an update is due. Security and other subject experts own the accuracy of claims in their domains. A named response owner coordinates the complete questionnaire and its approval path.
The account team is a credible entry point for these requests. For example, Salesforce directs customers seeking questionnaire assistance to their account executive or CSM. That routing does not mean the CSM should independently certify technical controls.
Capture these details before forwarding the file
An illustrative customer sends a spreadsheet titled “Annual Supplier Review” with no service name. The account recently added a new hosting region. Reusing the previous response without checking scope could answer for the wrong deployment.
Use this intake checklist:
- Customer legal entity, account sponsor and assessment contact.
- Service, deployment, hosting region and relevant data use.
- New purchase, expansion, renewal or other reason for review.
- Customer deadline and time zone, plus any internal review target.
- Required response format, including portal or spreadsheet constraints.
- Requested documents and any disclosure or NDA conditions.
- Existing approved response reference and changes since it was approved.
- Named coordinating owner and technical, privacy or legal reviewers needed.
Ask the customer about unclear scope early. Do not let a filename or an account name silently define the service being assessed.
Agree a simple ownership matrix
Adapt the following matrix to your organization. One person may hold several roles, but the responsibilities should remain visible.
