Package Held for Compliance Screening? What Shopify Merchants Should Check
Why carriers hold parcels for denied-party screening, what to do when a Shopify shipment is stuck, and how to screen orders before you buy the label.

A parcel stuck with a status like "held for compliance" or "on hold, further information required" usually means one of two things. Either customs needs something, such as documents, duties or a permit, or the carrier's own denied-party screening has flagged the shipper or receiver. The second one surprises merchants. The carrier has run a sanctions-style check on an order you have already packed, labelled and paid to ship.
Why carriers screen your shipments
Carriers screen to meet their own legal obligations. DHL Express says that every shipment it carries is screened. A shipment can be delayed if the shipper or receiver is linked to a denied party, or if the content or destination breaches country-based sanctions. DHL also says it may hold a shipment and ask for the receiver's full name when the details are incomplete.
That makes two common causes of a compliance hold:
- A possible match. The receiver's name, company or address looks like an entry on a restricted-party list.
- Not enough data to screen. Initials, a first name only, a missing company name or no phone number. The carrier can't rule out a match, so it holds the parcel.
Other carriers run their own checks. Read your carrier's shipping terms for how it handles holds.
What to do when a parcel is held
- Read the carrier's request. Find out whether it is asking for customs documents, payment of duties, or identity details for the screening team. Answer the question asked.
- Check your own screening result for the order. If your screening showed a possible match that someone allowed, review the reasoning again. If the order was never screened, screen the receiver and the company now.
- Complete missing details from the order. If the receiver's full name and company are on the order, give them to the carrier. Don't invent or guess details.
- Stop and review if your check also flags the party. Don't push the carrier to release a parcel while a possible match is open on your side. The order on hold guide covers the review.
- Record what happened. Note the carrier's reason, what you supplied, the outcome and the date. A record helps the next time this receiver orders.
