Should You Block Countries on Shopify? Start With the Problem
Country blocking, Markets, shipping zones and sanctions screening solve different problems. Choose the right control for unwanted traffic or risky orders.

Start by naming what you want to stop: visits, unsupported deliveries, suspicious payments or restricted transactions. Those are different problems. A country block can support a traffic policy, but it cannot establish who is buying or complete a sanctions review.
In a Reddit discussion about blocking specific countries, the merchant wanted to reduce unwanted foreign traffic and potential abuse. The discussion also raised concern about genuine buyers being excluded. That tradeoff deserves a deliberate choice rather than a growing blocklist with no defined purpose.
MatchAudit publishes this guide and offers a Shopify screening app. It adds value to order review; it is not a storefront traffic blocker.
Match each problem to a control
| What is happening? | Start here | What still needs attention? |
|---|---|---|
| Analytics show visits you do not recognize | Inspect traffic quality and reporting before changing access | A visitor's location alone does not establish harmful behavior |
| Buyers request delivery somewhere you do not serve | Review Markets, shipping profiles and available rates | Test the actual checkout and all relevant products |
| Suspicious payment attempts appear | Review payment-provider and fraud controls | A geographic filter does not verify cardholder authorization |
| Buyer or recipient details raise sanctions concerns | Use applicable party and destination checks | A domestic shipping address does not settle party identity |
| A product may require export review | Assess classification, destination and end use | Screening alone does not determine licensing |
Shopify's Markets overview explains how customer groups, regions and product availability relate. Pair that with your shipping configuration and test whether an unsupported destination can actually complete checkout. Browsing access and delivery eligibility do not need to be identical.
Keep visitor location separate from order facts
A visitor-location signal, billing address, shipping address and final recipient can point to different places. Gifts, business travel and parcel forwarding can explain some differences. Abuse can also involve misleading details. Review the specific inconsistency rather than deciding that one country signal proves the transaction's status.
