Shopify High-Risk Order: A Review Checklist Before You Ship
Unsure whether to fulfill a flagged order? Separate payment fraud, buyer verification and sanctions checks, then document a clear shipping decision.

A high-risk label is a reason to pause and investigate. It cannot make the shipping decision for you. Hold the affected fulfillment, read the underlying indicators and decide whether the available evidence meets your store's acceptance policy. Keep payment-fraud review and sanctions screening as separate checks.
In a Reddit discussion about a suspicious first order, a merchant struggled to decide whether to ship after receiving inconsistent customer details. Replies favored different levels of caution. That disagreement is useful: someone else's experience cannot establish who placed your order.
This guide is published by MatchAudit, which makes a Shopify sanctions-screening app. The checklist works as a manual process; the app adds a separate screening and decision-record workflow.
First, stop the parcel while you review
Open the order and confirm whether fulfillment has already been requested, accepted or dispatched. If goods have left the warehouse, a Shopify status change cannot retrieve them. Contact the fulfillment partner immediately about the options available.
For an unshipped order, use a fulfillment hold and verify that your supplier respects it. Payment authorization, capture and fulfillment are different events. A shipping hold does not reverse a payment. Check the payment provider's authorization deadline before choosing how long you can investigate.
Work through three separate questions
| Question | What to inspect | What the result cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Is the payment suspicious? | Shopify's fraud indicators, payment-provider checks and unusual order patterns | That the buyer is absent from sanctions lists |
| Does the purchase make commercial sense? | Customer details, quantity, destination and any delivery change | That the actual cardholder authorized it |
| Is there a screening concern? | Relevant buyer and recipient details against applicable sources | That the payment is genuine or the goods can be exported |
Shopify's fraud-prevention guidance provides the starting point for payment-risk review. Write down which indicators caused concern rather than copying only the risk label.
